Inclusion in the Early Years
‘Children have a right, spelled out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), to a provision which enables them to develop their personalities, talents, and abilities irrespective of ethnicity, culture or religion, home language, family background, learning difficulties, disabilities or gender

A Parent’s Guide to Special Educational Needs At
Jacdor Community Preschool

At Jacdor Community Preschool we aim to:
• Meet the needs of the whole child
• Remove barriers to learning
• Build confidence
• Develop independence and self-esteem
• Provide access to relevant learning opportunities that support the child to remain an effective and motivated learner.

We aim to achieve this by:
• Early intervention and support
• Planning for motivating activities around your child’s interests, by listening to their voice (this may be through observing your child, asking your views)
• Listening to your views and working in partnership to meet your child’s needs. We
regard you as equal partners in decisions about your child’s learning whilst at Jacdor.
• Keeping you informed about your child’s needs and progress

All about special educational needs
Approximately one in five children will have special educational needs (SEN) at some time during their early years or school career.
This means they may have difficulty with:
• Understanding information and others, and expressing themselves
• Sensory perception or physical mobility
• Managing their behavior
• Making friends or relating to adults
• Areas of Learning and development Organising themselves
These difficulties cause barriers to the child’s learning and development. With your consent, we will assess your child through observations to identify their strengths, needs, and the extra help they require. If necessary, and with your permission, we will ask for outside agencies to offer strategies for further support.

All children will be assigned a Key Person and a second Key Person whilst at Jacdor. If you have any concerns about your child’s development, please speak at any time to your child’s Key Person, or similar to any member of staff.

Hi, my name is Samantha Goodchild and I’m Jacdor’s Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo). I really enjoyed my role as SENCo, mainly for what your children have taught me! I will be happy to discuss any concerns or questions with you. I’m supported by Birth to Five Service, which offers advice and training to enhance and develop our practice.
